Luckily, members of the Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club are ready and willing to be great Santa's helpers  this holiday season!

Our Oahu ohana will be bringing gifts of brand new toys, gift cards, clothing & Christmas decor to our Santa's Helpers Breakfast Potluck at Amy's Hallmark Ala Moana for our Adopt-a-Family outreach! Santa won't mind that we'll be having a jolly old time enjoying delicious food and good fellowship while we wrap and pack up all the Christmas presents for the families. When the work is done it'll be time for fun reindeer games and prizes!

Our Maui ohana is helping to make sure Maui residents get on Santa's "Nice" list this year with their outreach for the Family Life Center! Bring new unwrapped gifts for boys and girls to Amy's Hallmark at Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center during Hallmark's Gift of Memories Weekend (December 1-3) and the Maui ohana will deliver them to the Family Life Center.

Kokua to Next Step Shelter
This Christmas and throughout the year, we strongly encourage Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club members and members of the community-at-large to support the Next Step Shelter. Under the auspices of Waikiki Health, Next Step Shelter provides services to those who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.  Next Step Shelter's services include:

  • Emergency shelter for couples and individuals
  • Referrals for medical care
  • Behavioral Health
  •  Tobacco Cessation Treatment
  • Eligibility assistance
  • Job training and placement assistance
  • Housing placement assistance

Next Step Shelter's Volunteer Services Coordinator, Kapua Tani, recently shared that the most needed items this holiday season are:

  • Feminine Pads (NOT Tampons)
  • Plastic Forks
  • Rolls of Paper Towels
  • Dinner Napkins
  • Ziploc bags - Gallon & Sandwich size
  • Foil Wrap

  • Cup a Noodle
  • Snack Bars
  • Spam
  • Vienna Sausage
  • SpaghettiOs
  • Other Microwavable or Ready-to-Eat Foods

Donated goods can be delivered directly to the Next Step Shelter.  The Next Step Shelter is located at Pier 1 off Forrest Avenue in the Kaka’ako area and UH School of Medicine. The shelter is accessible through a gated entrance located on Ilalo Street near Forrest Avenue. There is a sign for the shelter on the gate.

Monetary donations can be submitted online (but there is no option to specifically designate Next Step Shelter to receive your online donation), by phone (call 808-738-9362), or by mail using their downloadable donation form (the downloadable form does allow donors to designate Next Step Shelter as the recipient of their donations)

How Do We Know Next Step Shelter is Worthy of Donations?
Last year the Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club worked with Volunteer Services Coordinator, Kapua Tani, to do a community outreach at the shelter. We collected and delivered needed goods, purchased and decorated two gorgeous "Hallmark Keepsake Ornament" Christmas trees and put on a show for the kids that included crafts, singing and games. All of the club members who helped out during our outreach at the Next Step Shelter saw firsthand what valuable services the shelter provides!

Kapua and the staff at Next Step Shelter continue their work of helping those on the pathway out of homelessness. We worked with Kapua again this year to coordinate an opportunity for our members to kokua. Our Oahu members embodied the true spirit of Christmas (in July!) by donating needed goods for those at the shelter during our 2017 Ornament Premiere Early-Open Events.   Club volunteers from our ohana groups who meet at Hallmark Hawaii's Pearlridge, Windward and Ala Moana stores delivered all of the donated items directly to Next Step Shelter.

Before Ornament Debut, stores will add requested additional items to Wish List bags, as available, in the same order that Wish Lists were turned in. This great perk is being offered by Hallmark Hawaii to help ensure that our members have the most enjoyable and streamlined Ornament Debut experience possible.
No Need to RSVP - It’s As Easy as 1-2-3!
1. Head over to the Hallmark Hawaii store where you submitted your Wish List during regular store hours on the applicable Pre-Debut Reveal date;
2. Let a Hallmark sales associate know you’re a Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club member and that you’d like to preview your Wish List bag;
3. Preview the contents of your Wish List bag, make changes according to your preferences, and return your bag to a sales associate for future pick up during Ornament Debut!

KOC 30th Anniversary Local Club Pin
This year Hallmark is celebrating 30 years of the Keepsake Ornament Club (KOC) and recognizing the support and dedication of KOC members who belong to local clubs! Local clubs received mailings from Hallmark that included surprise KOC 30th Anniversary commemorative penguin pins for eligible local club members whos names and KOC membership numbers were listed on local club rosters that were submitted to the Hallmark KOC in January, 2017. (Another great reason for local club members to ensure they provide KOC membership numbers to their clubs to be included on their local clubs' rosters).  Mahalo nui to the Hallmark KOC & to our Keepsake Ornament Club Friends for these wonderful gifts of appreciation!

The Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club will be distributing these super-cute pins to eligible Hawaii members during our club's Early-Open Ornament Premiere event meetings at Hallmark Hawaii stores on July 15, 2017.  Check out our 2017 Calendar of Events in the extreme right-hand column of this club blog to see Early-Open Ornament Premiere meeting times for each Hallmark Hawaii store.

~ In 1987 the Keepsake Ornament Club  (KOC) welcomed its first member, while the Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club welcomed its first member in 2014.

~ Local clubs cannot use the terms, “Keepsake Ornament" (and/or) "Keepsake Ornaments” in conjunction with their club names or logos because they are trademarked by Hallmark. The name “Keepsake” can only be used if the word “Ornament(s)” does not directly follow, so Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club is acceptable.

~ What is a Local Club?
Hallmark says, "Many local clubs were formed out of the desire of our national club members to meet with other collectors in their local communities. They are enthusiastic and spirited consumers who enjoy coming together with others to share and discuss their passion for collecting."
..."Local clubs are made up of all walks of life all tied together by their common interests."
..."Many local clubs reach out to their communities and provide service and donations to local charities. Some local clubs assist their store sponsor during store events to recruit new members and share their knowledge of Keepsake Ornaments."

~ The Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club has had the honor of being able to do community outreach projects to benefit River of Life Mission, the Ronald McDonald House(s) of Hawaii, HUGS, and the Next Step Shelter.   In 2017 our club's focus is to support local efforts to help the hungry, the homeless, and families and children in transition.

The Hawaii Keepsake Collectors Club held a Hallmark ornament donation drive at Hallmark Hawaii stores throughout the islands in January, 2017, and we collected lots of gorgeous brand new Keepsake Ornament donations. Mahalo nui to Hallmark Hawaii and to all of the wonderfully generous donors who helped to fill our collection boxes!

Not too long after our ornament drive, our members were surprised and saddened to learn that families with children would have to be moved out of many of Hawaii's shelters due to newly imposed state regulations, including the families and children at the Next Step Shelter. Needless to say this completed thwarted our great plans to do a Christmas outreach for the families and kids at Next Step Shelter this year as we had done last year.

We're happy to report, however, that working in partnership with Helping Hands Hawaii our members will be bringing Christmas joy and cheer to the homes of two local families this year by putting together Christmas tree decorating “kits” that will include the ornaments we’ve collected. Our club will also be participating in Helping Hands Hawaii’s Adopt a Family program! We’ll be requesting two family’s wish lists of wants and needs so that members can purchase items as Christmas gifts for them. Our "Kits of Cheer" and gifts for the families will be delivered to Helping Hands Hawaii's clearinghouse in early December 2017.

List of Christmas Gear Needed for Our Kits of Cheer
(2) Fresh Christmas Trees
(2) Extension Cords
(2) Tree Stands
(1400) Multicolored Christmas Lights - 700 per tree
Assorted Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments
Non-Breakable Christmas Ornaments
(2) Tree Toppers
Ornament Hooks
Christmas Gifts (based on each family's wish list)

About HHH's Adopt a Family Program:
What is the Adopt A Family program?
Adopt A Family (AAF) is a seasonal program administered by Helping Hands Hawaii during the holiday season that links individuals and families in need with kind donors in the community.

How does the Adopt A Family program work?
If you are interested in being an Adopt A Family donor, complete the AAF Donor Information Form or call (808) 440-3800 to fill one out over the phone. The selection process will begin around the first week of November, but you may begin sending in your applications immediately.

In November, we will send you an assortment of family stories to review. You have 3 days to select and notify us of the family you wish to adopt. The families you do not select will return to the pool of applicants to give other donors a chance to adopt them. You may begin buying gifts to fulfill your family’s Wish List once we have confirmed your selection.

Why do I only have 3 days to pick a family?
When we send you the assortment of family stories, these applicants are put on hold and cannot be distributed to other donors until you make your selection. The longer they are on hold, the more difficult it will be to match them up with a donor. Thus, we kindly ask that you select your family within 3 days of receiving the stories. If you do not make a selection from your matched families and respond within 3 days, your matches will re-enter the pool to be matched to other potential donors, and we cannot guarantee that they will remain available for your selection. (i.e. you may have to start the matching process again).

Our goal is to maintain a 100 percent adoption rate and do our best to give these families the happiest holiday season that we can.

Do I have to buy everything on the family’s Wish List?
No, the Wish List is a guide to inform donors of the types of items the family is in need of this holiday season. Donors may purchase the items on the list or any other items they would like for the family. The donated gifts are at the donor’s discretion. Please provide a detailed itemized listing for all items donated to the family.

Where do I drop off the gifts?
Gifts can be dropped off at our Community Clearinghouse located at 2100 N. Nimitz Hwy.

What is the deadline to drop off gifts?
The drop-off deadline is Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016. We will be accepting donor applications through this date, but please allow yourself time to acquire the Wish List items and deliver it to the Community Clearinghouse. Our goal is to deliver the gifts to families before Christmas, so the earlier we receive them from donors the better.

What are the Community Clearinghouse’s hours of operation?
The Community Clearinghouse is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. From Dec. 5 to Dec. 9, the Clearinghouse will extend its hours through 6:30 p.m. to accommodate donors who would like to drop off items after work. Additionally, it will be open on Saturday (Nov. 26, Dec. 3 and Dec. 10) from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. (noon) for donor convenience.

Do the gifts have to be new?
Yes, all Wish List items must be new. You may wrap the items in festive paper as long as they are properly labeled with the Family Code (unique identifying code assigned to the family).

If you wish to give additional items not on the Wish List that may be gently used, we humbly ask that you remember these are holiday gifts and consider the condition of the items carefully before including them.

If you would like to make a general donation of gently used items to the Community Clearinghouse, we will gratefully accept them for use by other clients not participating in the Adopt A Family program.

Can I make a monetary donation to the family?
Yes, but because Adopt A Family is not a financial assistance program, we are unable to give families cash donations. Instead, we will convert your monetary contribution in its exact value into a gift card to an all-in-one store, like Walmart, Kmart, Target, etc., that the family can use.

What kind of families participate in this program?
Most of the participants in the Adopt A Family program are homeless or are low-income individuals or families living in emergency shelters and transitional housing. They are referred to the program and screened for eligibility through an application process that utilizes our network of partnering agencies that specialize in assisting this population.

How do the gifts get to the family?
When the Community Clearinghouse receives the Wish List items, we distribute them to the families through their referring agency.

Can I meet the family and deliver the gifts myself?
Yes, some families are open to meeting their donors. If you would like to meet the family, you must indicate this on your application form so we can match you with families who have also indicated on their application that they are open to meeting their donors.

Instead of adopting a family, can I just make a donation?
Yes, you can make a monetary gift to our Good Neighbor Fund online at or by mailing a check to 2100 N. Nimitz Hwy., Honolulu, HI 96819.

You may also drop off unwrapped gifts at the Community Clearinghouse, which we will use to fulfill Wish Lists for families who are not selected by donors. Most families are seeking very basic needs, such as clothing, household items, toys for young children and food. You may also choose to give gift cards for restaurants, groceries, clothing, educational toys and multi-purpose items (all-in-one stores like Walmart, Kmart, Target, etc.).

Can I adopt a family from a neighbor island?
No, unfortunately, the Adopt A Family program is only available on Oahu at this time.
